Tre Nonne is a small Italian Restaurant on Jonestown Road on the West Side of Winston-Salem. It is located in a strip shopping center with plenty of parking. Tre Nonne prides itself on its homemade pastas and desserts and family recipes.
Tre Nonne is a family style Italian restaurant with recipes inspired by the Maresca Family meals. It is a family restaurant that opened in January of 2016. Being a newer family run restaurant, it lacks some of the sophistication of professional chef owned and ran establishment. They may lack in restaurant experience, but, Tre Nonne has a very friendly and personal atmosphere. Many of the customers are obviously returning customers and are on a first-name basis with one of the owners, Tony. There is a good chance you will be served by one of the owners if you visit.
The interior is simple. Wood paneling with some artwork on the walls, and updated lighting. The noise level was low and it was a comfortable place to eat.
The Food at Tre Nonne
We started off with Tre Nonne's Calamari.
The Calamari was deep fried with a very basic and simple breader and served with a side of marinara dipping sauce. The calamari was very tender indicating a very quick fry, maybe too quick. The outside was slightly soggy. I would prefer it to be on the very tender and slightly soggy side rather than the overcooked and tough as rubber bands side. A bit more seasoning in the breader and the marinara would have brought this dish from on the boring side to the incredible side. Overall, it was better than many of the calamari's I have had in the area.
Next, we had Tre Nonne's Shrimp Fra Diavolo
Tre Nonne advertises the fact that they make all of their own pastas, so I had to try one. The dish came out hot and fresh from the kitchen. From the temperature, it obviously did not spend any time under a heat lamp. The sauce was a bit thinner than most Fra Diavolo, but it was flavorful with lots of garlic and pepper. It was a bit oily, maybe a bit too high in olive oil, but it was still quite tasty. The shrimp were very fresh tasting.
Overall it was a well prepared dish.
Next, was Tre Nonne Veal Picatta.
The veal was a touch on the tough side from being a bit overcooked. The sauce was thicker than most with a bit more lemon flavor and less white wine flavor. It was served with the homemade penne. The goal of cooking pasta is to be al dente which has a firmer bite. Tre Nonne's penne was a bit softer than ideal. This could be an issue with the quality of the flour (durum Semolina) used to make the pasta or from it being a bit overcooked.
Overall the dish was good.
Overall, Tre Nonne is good. I would rate them about average to slightly above average for Italian Restaurants in our area. I am sure they will refine things as the restaurant matures. I would like to see them expand past the family-style traditional Italian dishes into more creative Italian inspired original signature dishes. Italian food can be so much more than the traditional Italian short list.
